What Is Probuphine Long-Acting Opioid Treatment?

Probuphine is a long-acting medication that’s the first of its kind. After just a single treatment, you will have a steady flow of the drug buprenorphine (which is marketed under the brand names of Suboxone, Subutex and Zubsolv) every day, 24 hours a day for six months. This drug, intended for patients who have proven to be medically stable after using buprenorphine, provides new hope for many people addicted to opioids.

A Probuphine implant procedure is extremely fast and simple. It consists of four small implants placed under the skin of your upper arm, and only takes about 15 minutes. After six months, you will come back into our office to have the implant removed.

How Effective is a Probuphine Implant?

While buprenorphine has revolutionized treatment for opioid addictions, it can be tough for patients to remember to take a pill each and every day or use a film that dissolves under the tongue. That’s what’s so exciting about Probuphine opioid addiction treatment at our facility in Bakersfield, CA. All you’ll need is four implants placed simultaneously under the skin, and you won’t have to worry about it for six months. It will help you make healthier choices and gradually restore balance to your brain circuits so they once again work the way they should.

A clinical trial involving 177 patients showed that those who were already stable while taking buprenorphine pills not only maintained that stability, but were also more likely to remain abstinent from habit-forming opioids. This is incredibly important, because vigilance is key when trying to overcome an opioid addiction, which affects nearly 2 million people in the US.

What Are the Main Differences Between Probuphine and Vivitrol?

If you’re dealing with an opioid addiction and you’re ready to rid yourself of it once and for all, you have more than likely done some research regarding your treatment options. Another medication you have probably run across is an injectable drug known as Vivitrol.

Probuphine and Vivitrol have a few key differences between them. The first is that Vivitrol injections occur once per month, while a Probuphine implant lasts for six months. Probuphine is also less expensive than Vivitrol.

Both medications work by acting on the brain receptors that opioids affect. Vivitrol “blocks” those receptors and, in a way, makes someone immune to the effects of painkillers and heroin. Vivitrol also lowers cravings and reduces the chances of a relapse.

However, if they’re struggling with opioid addition, an addict must have completely abstained from opiates for at least a week before Vivitrol can be effective. As we know all too well, it’s almost impossible for someone in the grip of an opioid addiction to quit cold turkey for seven days. On the other hand, patients can benefit from a Probuphine implant procedure immediately. The only requirement for Probuphine is that a patient is stable on a sublingual dose of buprenorphine (Suboxone or Subutex) for several weeks before getting the implant.

A professional with Synergy Recovery Services will have a detailed discussion with you to determine which type of medication will best fulfill your needs.
