Can Under-Eye Fillers Help Treat Dark Circles?

Having dark circles under your eyes is a common experience for many people. Often accompanied by bags, these dark circles can invite unwanted comments about your appearance and questions about whether you are sleeping enough.

For some, making a lifestyle change such as reducing stress, getting more sleep or using eye creams can help correct the issue. However, sometimes under-eye circles are genetic or result from the natural volume loss that occurs as we age. In this case, making lifestyle changes or investing in topical medicines may not be enough to restore the appearance of your eyes. Luckily, Synergy Wellness is here to help with our under-eye filler solutions.

Under-eye fillers are a form of aesthetic medicine in which a doctor will inject various substances into the area under the eye. The injection fills the hallow in the lower lid or tear trough to reduce sagging and minimize the appearance of dark circles. As a low-cost, minimally invasive treatment option, many people use under-eye fillers to improve their appearance and overall self-esteem.

Eye fillers for dark circles are not for everyone. If you are considering undergoing under-eye injections for dark circles, consider this procedure carefully and consult your doctor to ensure the treatment is right for you. At Synergy Wellness, our team is happy to walk you through the entire under-eye filler process to ensure you feel comfortable and confident at every step.

What Causes Under-Eye Circles?

Under-eye circles are a general term to describe various cosmetic concerns around the eyes. Everyone has a natural valley on the rim of the bone encircling the eye. This valley forms a normal contour and may be more profound for some people. If you have fair skin, the network of blood vessels underneath the skin may show and make you more prone to skin darkening. Some additional reasons why you may have under-eye circles include:

  • Age: Aging is a common reason for under-eye circles. As you age, your skin starts to thin, and you lose collagen and fat, which help to maintain elasticity. As your skin loses its elasticity, the blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible, which can cause a dark area under your eye.
  • Eyestrain: Staring at a screen for an extended time can strain your eyes and cause the blood vessels around your eyes to enlarge, leading to dark circles.
  • Allergies: When your body experiences an allergic reaction, it releases histamines which can cause redness and puffiness as the blood vessels dilate and become more visible under the skin. You may also experience an increased urge to scratch the skin around your eyes, which can worsen your dark circles.
  • Dehydration: If you do not hydrate your body properly, it can make the skin underneath your eyes appear dull and hollow.
  • Sun overexposure: The sun causes your body to release excess melanin, which gives your skin color. Experiencing too much sun can cause the pigmentation in your skin to become darker.
  • Fatigue: Oversleeping, extreme fatigue or missing a few hours of sleep can cause dark circles. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to become dull and pale and for the dark tissues under your skin to show.
How Does Under-Eye Filler Help With Dark Circles?

How Does Under-Eye Filler Help With Dark Circles?

Many people consider their eyes their most striking feature, and if their eyes don’t look good, they may not feel good about themselves. To help improve the appearance of your eyes, your provider will use a tear trough filler. During a tear trough treatment process, they will inject a filler called Restylane into the fragile skin under your eyes. Typically, your injections will start with half a syringe of filler for under-eye circles and then they will re-inject the filler in two weeks for optimal results.

Restylane contains Hyaluronic acid, which is a safe ingredient you may already have in your skincare routine. Hyaluronic acid is FDA-approved and is an effective method for treating wrinkles, a hollowed-out appearance under the eyes and dark circles.

There are a few situations where it may be wise not to receive under-eye filler. Women who are pregnant and breastfeeding should not undergo treatment. You should also not receive treatment if you have an allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine.

What to Expect After Under-Eye Injections

Under-eye injections for dark circles are typically short and painless procedures. A practitioner will apply an anesthetic to the injection area and inject the filler after about 15 minutes.

Typically, after receiving your under-eye circle filler, your doctor will recommend that you remain in an upright position and avoid touching your face for three hours or so to lower the chance of swelling. Depending on your needs, they may also suggest sleeping in an upright position during the first night. You should avoid heavy exercise and high temperatures for the first 24 hours to reduce the risk of swelling.

If you experience some swelling after your injection, there is no need to worry. Place a cold compress on your under-eye area for five to 10 minutes every hour to reduce swelling. In the rare case of minor pain or tenderness, you can also take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen or naproxen. However, if you experience bruising that seems to be spreading or severe under-eye pain, you will want to contact your provider as soon as possible.

Generally, you will see results immediately after receiving your injection and will continue to see improvement for up to two weeks after the procedure.

How Long Does Under-Eye Filler Last?

Under-eye filler for dark circles is not a permanent procedure. The gel will slowly dissolve over time, so you will need to come back to Synergy Wellness for follow-up appointments to maintain your results.

Every patient has a different reaction to under-eye circle filler. However, fillers for dark under-eye circles typically last anywhere from six to 18 months. Some factors that can influence how long your filler treatment lasts include:

  • Your age
  • Lifestyle
  • Muscle activity
  • Skin type
