DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and a precursor of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. For many years it was believed that DHEA had no particular beneficial effects other than being a building block for the sex hormones until recently, when researches discovered that DHEA slowly declines as we age. It was believed that DHEA would be a good marker of aging itself. Since then several studies have shown the beneficial effects of DHEA on decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer and increasing our overall well-being.
