I became first interested in age management (bio-identical hormone replacement) when a few patients asked me if I do “hormones”. I admit that my knowledge about hormones at that time mainly came from what I learned in medical school and during residency training and could be summarized with the following words: “if it’s low, replace it”.
Mainly because of inquiries of my patients I started looking into hormone replacement and really became interested in this new science. I visited a few seminars and learned from one of the leading age management physicians in the US.
The concept of age management is that the natural aging process is actually a “disease” and the symptoms of this disease include fatigue, aches, and pains, depression, memory loss, decreased sexual drive, etc… with other words, signs of “getting old”. The aging disease also has complications which include thinning of bones (osteoporosis), heart attacks, cancer, and strokes.
A well-known fact is that hormone levels decline as we get older. In the past it was believed that declining hormone levels are a by-product of aging, however with the new concept of aging and age management the idea is that a decline in natural hormones may be the cause of aging.
Several clinical research studies showed that replacing declining levels of natural hormones may improve symptoms and complications of aging including the ones listed above.
Since I started replacing hormones several of my patients described a new quality of life that they didn’t think was possible anymore.
With bio-identical hormone replacement, we cannot stop the aging process, but we can treat the symptoms of aging and restore the “quality of life”.
