We are different from other Vivitrol treatment centers in Bakersfield, CA in that we do not solely offer medication in order to treat an addiction. Synergy Recovery Services combines medication with counseling in order to help our clients become — and stay — sober.
Jennifer struggled with Alcohol Dependence when she started treatment with Vivitrol (injectable slow-release Naltrexone) and Intensive Outpatient Counseling (IOP) at Synergy Recovery Services. She is a history professor at Taft College and is looking forward to a life in recovery without Alcohol.
Vivitrol, a medication that’s FDA-approved to help prevent relapses in patients who suffer from an opioid or alcohol addiction, is an exciting new treatment approach. Vivitrol treatment at our facility in Bakersfield, CA involves the use of injections every four weeks, typically in the buttocks. The medication does not lead to addiction and does not appear in urine drug screening tests.
Whether you use it for months or for years, you can safely stop use without having to worry about any potential withdrawals.
There are two main benefits that people derive from Vivitrol treatment. The first is that the medication helps to substantially reduce the chances of a relapse. You may have been clean for days, weeks or even months, but you’re still at risk for a relapse. If you take Vivitrol, however, neither drugs nor alcohol will have the chance to “work” on the receptors in your brain. In a way, a Vivitrol injection is almost like a shield of sorts, protecting you from the effects of alcohol or opiates.
The second chief benefit of Vivitrol is the reduction of cravings, which is the most common reason an addict relapses. No matter what type of addiction you have, sooner or later you will crave the substance that has caused you so much trouble. But Vivitrol shots lower those cravings* and help ensure that your road to recovery will be as smooth as possible.
You may have heard of Suboxone, a medication that’s also used to treat opioid addiction. While we also offer this course of treatment at Synergy Recovery Services, there are some substantial differences between the two you need to be aware of.
First, Suboxone is typically administered through either a pill or a dissolvable film that goes underneath the tongue. Vivitrol, on the other hand, is administered through an injection. Suboxone, which is used to help wean someone off a dangerous opioid, is designed to work as a bridge between the time you first stop using a dangerous opioid and the time you are clean.
In patients addicted to opioids (heroin & painkillers) we use Suboxone first, to assist in tapering off opioids. Then, about a week after the last Suboxone dose, we typically begin administering Vivitrol. The reason is that someone must have completely abstained from any opioid (including Suboxone) for seven days in order for Vivitrol shots to work. If Vivitrol is administered too early in opioid users, it may trigger a severe withdrawal syndrome. Patients addicted to alcohol may start Vivitrol injections right away, without waiting for 7 days, because Vivitrol in alcoholics will not cause any withdrawals.
In order for Vivitrol to work, you obviously have to first realize you have an addiction. No matter what walk of life you may come from — whether you’re rich, poor or somewhere in between — you can become addicted to drugs or alcohol. It can overcome you before you even realize you have a problem.
There are both physical and behavioral signs of alcohol and substance abuse. If any of these seem familiar, you should seriously consider seeking Vivitrol treatment in our Bakersfield facility. Here are just a few of them:
