If you are a man who is struggling with enlarged breast tissue, it can impact your self-image and other aspects of your life. Luckily, there is something that can be done. Gynecomastia treatment is available and can help bring balance to your body and boost your self-confidence. Here at Synergy Wellness Center in Bakersfield, CA, we are proud to offer male breast reduction services to our patients and encourage you to learn more about it.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

When male breast tissue is swollen or enlarged, it is typically caused by an imbalance between their estrogen and testosterone levels. Estrogen, a hormone in charge of female traits, causes the growth of breast tissue. When a man has too much of it, his breasts grow larger than is considered average. There are many factors that can contribute to the hormone imbalance and subsequent tissue growth. They include:

  • Obesity
  • Kidney failure
  • Poor diet
  • Tumors in the adrenal glands or testes
  • Liver disease
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypogonadism
  • Hypoandrogenism

Additionally, taking certain types of medications can cause this issue. If your condition is caused by a medication you are on, it may clear up if you stop taking it or switch to a different kind. It is normal for men to experience a certain degree of gynecomastia during certain phases of their lives. This includes birth and puberty when hormones naturally fluctuate wildly.

Symptoms of Gynecomastia

The most obvious sign of this condition is swollen breast tissue. Breast tenderness is another common symptom. The problem may have moved beyond being simply cosmetic and be more serious if you are experiencing pain or discharge from one or both of your breasts.
