Considering Dark Spot Correction? Learn More About IPL!

One of the most common signs of skin aging is the increasing prominence of age spots, liver spots, freckles, and other blemishes. These dark spots become more visible when melanin concentration increases or when capillaries begin to increase in size and number. Injury scars, acne scars, and even fine wrinkles can develop a shady red or brown tone. If you’ve tried various treatments for dark spot correction but seem to be losing the battle against the development of dark patches on your face, consider IPL therapy.

This is similar to laser resurfacing, but there’s one major difference. Unlike laser treatment, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy doesn’t involve skin ablation. Instead, focused broadband light energy penetrates through the epidermis without damaging it. The energy is absorbed by darker tissues, and this stimulates tissue replacement as well as the shrinking of capillaries.

Understanding Broadband Light Therapy

The device used in this method of skin rejuvenation emits a wide range of light frequencies. The instrument can be specially calibrated to emit a combination of wavelengths that interact with each other in such a manner that it results in energy penetration through the skin tissue. This means that the epidermis is not ablated or damaged.

Instead, darker tissues that contain color pigments absorb the energy. These tissues heat up. The body responds by sending nutrients to the affected area. The affected tissues are discarded in favor of healthier cells. At the same time, capillaries present in the blemishes shrink. This significantly reduces the appearance of the blemish.

Scheduling a Treatment Series

We will consult with you and examine your facial features. We note the actual skin tone as well as the skin thickness. This allows us to calibrate the IPL device to deliver the proper wavelengths of focused light energy.

During your dark spot correction treatment, a device is pressed against the skin, and the energy is delivered in what is termed an ultrapulse. The pulse lasts only a couple of milliseconds. After multiple pulses, the device is moved to the next area of concern. A series of treatment sessions is usually required.

Enjoying a More Youthful Appearance

In the weeks and months following your last dark spot correction treatment session, you’ll notice visual improvement in the appearance of dark spots. This is a much simpler, less invasive procedure than most other skin treatments, and the results can last for quite a while. Many of our clients choose to undergo IPL therapy maintenance sessions as needed in order to maintain a youthful appearance.
